It seems the general sentiment now is to give no-fault another chance with some tweaks. If that doesn't work to stem the fraud, then the next step might be to go to a tort system.

Good post. Wouldn't a fairly easy fix be to change from no-fault to a contributory insurance policy? No-fault hasn't worked in Florida since it was instituted, any frankly does nothing to penalize those without insurance, while hurting those who are responsible. I recall in 2006 that no-fault was going to be sunsetted, and seeing my personal policies drop by almost 50% was a great reprive. Unfortunately, our then governor called a special session of the legislature which renewed the no-fault insurance schema.

Does any one know of a carrier that will write worker's compensation on a guy that does hurricane shutters & has a height exposure? No prior coverage. We are in Florida.

Thanks,

Quote: 2010 Citizens paid out $250 million in claims for sinkholes and collected $32 million in sinkhole premiums .. Now let use the same numbers for Fire claims, theft claims and lost rental income. Using your numbers the insurance company should be decreasing the polices for Fire, theft and lost rental income if they want to increase the fee's for sinkhole coverage. Not to mention how much profit they have made with the Hurricane coverage.

Keeping this in mind, The new requirement for sinkhole Activity claims are the same for sinkhole Catastrophic failure and yet they want to charge the customer for Activity failure with the full knowledge that if the client meet the new requirements for his sinkhole activity claim he also meets the requirements for Catastrophic claims.

In my opinion. If you are going to charge for activity coverage and the home owner has confirmed sinkhole activity they should be able to submit and get a claim paid.

And lets not forget Citizens is making a large profit each year.

I have 5 investment properties with confirmed sinkhole activity and damage that I can't sell and can't afford to repair. Even though I paid insurance with no claims for the past 5 years.

Your comment that there is no evidence of increased sinkhole activity is stupid!
In the last 6 years, there have been thousands of new homes built in the area you mentioned as sinkhole alley! Before these houses were built there was nothing there, how could anyone prove there was no previous sinkhole activity, or movement!
You also ignore that while these new areas were being built on, Counties were quick to give developers easy access to more and more lots that provided these counties with huge amouts of money in lot fees! Do you question whether there were enough inspections, or any inspections done to these properties to make sure there were no sinkhole, or potential sinkhole activity before these homes were built? No you do not!!! Do you question the effect of heavy construction equipment moving over land that never experienced this heavy load before? No you do not!!
You also ignore that all these people living in these thousands of new homes used water at the same time Florida was going through a drought that caused the water table to drop! This is a proven cause for sinkhole activity!!

This is an excellent article and thank for including the statistic that 20% of of flood claims come from low-risk flood zones. There's no better time to increase awareness so homeowners aren't caught off-guard.

Citizens is the state-run insurer, and because it is prohibited from charging enough money to cover the cost of claims, all Floridians with a property insurance policy or auto policy make up the difference. In fact, assessments at the current level will continue through 2016 because claims payouts from the 2005 hurricanes were far greater than the money Citizens had available.

Why does Citizens keep charging money on my auto and home insurance policies. I am not insured with Citizens, but for several years I keep paying for their problems. I am not alone, everyone I know is paying the same. When is enough....enough. Everything is going up and I am a widow, with no hope of having a pay raise, only decrease
